What happened
Metsa Group said on May 28, 2026 that it inaugurated its expanded and modernized tissue paper mill in Mariestad, Sweden. The company held the opening ceremony on May 26.
Investment scale
Metsa said the Mariestad project represents a 370 million euro investment and doubles annual production capacity to about 145,000 tonnes. The upgraded site includes a new tissue machine and three new converting lines for rolled and folded tissue products.
Why it matters
This is one of the largest recent European tissue investments and a direct sign that hygiene paper producers are still funding new converting capacity close to regional demand. It also reflects the push to pair higher throughput with better water and energy performance.
