What happened
Packaging Europe reported on May 11, 2026 that Smart Planet Technologies unveiled HyperBarrier PE film. Smart Planet describes the product as a recyclable mono-material polyethylene film for high-barrier flexible packaging.
Performance claims
Smart Planet says the film can deliver up to 300 times better oxygen barrier and 3 to 4 times better moisture barrier than conventional LDPE while staying compatible with PE recycling streams. The company says the film is designed to run on standard blown film, cast film, and extrusion coating lines without added metallization or laminations.
Why it matters
Barrier PE that stays in a PE recycling stream is one of the main technical targets in flexible packaging. If these claims hold in commercial trials, the product could reduce the need for more complex multilayer structures in food and other sensitive applications.
